Dress Code

Parents & Students, please keep our dress code in mind when purchasing school clothes. Many items that are fashionable for students this age are not appropriate for the school setting. It is the belief of Gotha Middle School that students should dress appropriately for a learning atmosphere. These are the guidelines we feel are appropriate for the Gotha Middle School students.

  1. Head: No hats, caps, bandanas, sweatbands (wrist or head) visors, scarves, do-rags, stocking caps, or sunglasses shall be brought to school.
  2. Hair, including facial, should be neatly trimmed and well groomed.
  3. Wearing clothes or hair in such a manner as to indicate gang membership will not be tolerated.
  4. Shirts and tops must be a sufficient length to cover the midriff area of the student and be able to be tucked into the student's waistband. Shirts and tops must have a neckline to sufficiently cover the entire shoulder and chest. Midriff tops, tank tops, strapless tops, spaghetti straps, muscle shirts or any revealing clothing is not allowed. No pajamas. No under-garments may be visible. All shirts must be zipped or buttoned to an acceptable level (no cleavage). Jackets or sweaters (unbuttoned or unzipped) do not exempt a student from adhering to the dress code.
  5. No see-through or mesh garments shall be worn without appropriate clothing underneath.
  6. Apparel with inappropriate , obscene or profane statements of illustration are not allowed. These include any reference to drug and alcohol use, acts of violent nature, racial slurs, sexual innuendoes, or gang membership.
  7. Pants & Shorts : Baggy pants (or shorts) with large pockets pose a potential safety risk and are not acceptable. Pants may not be worn below the waist or be so long that they drag on the floor; overall straps or suspenders must be worn on both shoulders.
  8. Shorts, Skirts & Dresses must fall within the following guidelines: Hemlines shall be no shorter than mid-thigh* – even if wearing leggings/leotards.
  9. Biker shorts/exercise shorts are not considered appropriate for school and are not allowed.
  10. Feet: Always wear appropriate footwear for safety. All shoes must have a back strap (no bedroom slippers or wrap-around lacing i.e. “Roman Sandals”). This is especially critical since students often use staircases. “Heelys” (shoes that roll) are not permitted.
  11. Items worn by students which could cause harm to others, such as metal pocket chains on pants, will not be allowed.
  12. Any other clothing or jewelry deemed inappropriate by the administration will not be tolerated.
Failure to comply with these guidelines will result in disciplinary action, which may include a warning, calling home for appropriate clothing, placement in ISS for the day, or more serious action for repent offenders.
